Daegwang Middle School Green Smart School of the Future

Daekwang Middle School, officially established in 1947, has a long history, with its current main school building having stood for 63 years before this reconstruction. Despite its long history, the school continues to evolve in response to changes in its surroundings and in education. Within the Daekwang Academy campus are Daekwang Elementary School, Daekwang Middle School, and Daekwang High School, along with various auxiliary buildings constructed at different times. Over the years, these buildings have accumulated to form complementary relationships in response to changing educational programs.

Ideally, each school would form its own cluster around its main building. Daekwang Middle School, however, is located on higher ground within the campus, making access difficult. It is also separated from shared facilities such as sports facilities and the cafeteria, while lacking sufficient outdoor spaces for rest and recreation. Therefore, the primary consideration was the massing and placement of the new building to provide convenient access to the main school building—the center of middle school education—and to create abundant outdoor spaces.

The school’s founding principle, “Reverence for Heaven and Love for Humanity,” embodies the idea of loving one’s neighbor as oneself and forms the basis of an education that fosters prosocial values. In response, the school is designed to express its presence as an educational institution beyond its boundaries and strengthen its connection with the local community. Within the campus, a variety of indoor and outdoor spaces encourage interaction among students and support creative, interdisciplinary activities.
