Musimjae

The simple yet not shabby, the splendid yet not luxury

“Frugal, yet not shabby; splendid, yet not extravagant.” This is how Kim Busik described the palaces of Baekje in the Samguk Sagi. Musimjae is neither a grand palace nor an expensive luxury residence. Rather, it is a small, concise, and modest house with a total floor area of less than 60 pyeong. Its form is equally simple.

Yet, in responding to the differences in site elevation and through the use of a gabled roof, the house creates interior heights distinct from those of an ordinary residence. While its materials, colors, and details are restrained and modest, the spatial profile possesses a subtle dignity, offering generous and refined volumes as well as a variety of perspectives.

We sought to provide everything in just the right measure—nothing more, nothing less. Even so, we sincerely hope that this home offers a living space rich enough to embody the client’s discerning desire to live with detachment and simplicity.
