Yongin West Fire Station Design Competition

A fire station is a single building, yet it embodies two distinct landscapes. One faces the city, where emergency response is demanded; the other embraces nature, where recovery begins. Yongin West Fire Station integrates these two fronts—response and recovery—within a single architectural framework.

The site is located at the boundary where an urban roadway meets a natural green landscape. Taking full advantage of this unique condition, the proposal clearly organizes the building into two complementary realms: the urban front dedicated to emergency response and the natural rear devoted to training and everyday life.

Facing the roadway, the fire engine garage and dispatch yard are strategically positioned to ensure rapid and intuitive emergency deployment while establishing a strong civic presence appropriate for a public institution. At the rear, training grounds and restorative outdoor spaces are integrated into the surrounding woodland, providing firefighters with an environment where professional training and daily recovery can coexist.

Rather than separating these two functions, the proposal unifies them within a single architectural composition. The domain of emergency response facing the city and the landscape of recovery embracing nature are seamlessly connected, creating a fire station that supports both operational efficiency and the well-being of its users.
